The academic accomplishments of Matilda Buchen led her to become the class of 2025 salutatorian. Outside of her academics she is a three time All-state tennis player and won the doubles championship in 2023.
Matilda has had a lot of success in school due to her dedication and hard work. Although Matilda has had many important teachers she feels that Mr. Mirro, Mr. Grodski, and Mrs. Mitsos helped her become so successful. Buchen said, “These teachers truly care if students understand the topics and appreciate when students ask questions. They are thorough with their teachings and can make difficult concepts sound easy.”
Matilda’s tennis coach, Mr. Reed said, “Her presence alone elevates everyone’s level and desire to be better tennis players and people. All of her teammates love getting to hit with her, joke with her, and witness the shots she pulls off, which never cease to amaze.”
Reed also said, “Matilda’s legacy will forever stand as one of the greatest tennis players in Westhampton Beach History. The fact that she was able to win all of these Division Titles, County Titles, and a State Championship in 2023, all while being in several AP classes and being salutatorian.”
Aside from school and sports Buchen is a part of her community through Westhampton Junior Ambulance, Camp Good Grief, the Southampton Animal Shelter. Being salutatorian is special to Matilda because, “This school has given me many opportunities, and I am honored to leave a piece of me here when I graduate.”
Matilda will be staying close to home and attending Adelphi University. She will be majoring in Biology, in the 3+4 BS/DDS Early Assurance program with the NYU College of Denistry. In the future she hopes to open a private dental practice on Long Island.
