Along with college, work force or military, another option for seniors is a gap year. Taking a gap year isn’t just a break from academics, it’s an opportunity to build skills, gain perspectives and prepare for life’s next big chapter.
For senior Finn Norton, who plans on taking a gap year before he attends college, spending his first year on an island, surfing, is the way to go.
Finn is very excited to go to Costa Rica to surf and explore the gorgeous beaches. After graduation he’s deciding to take a gap year to gain new experiences before starting college. Finn feels Costa Rica is the best place to unwind and look for job opportunities.
Finn said, “I don’t have a set plan as of yet, but I am hoping to travel a lot and surf. I am looking at different job opportunities as a surf instructor in Costa Rica.”
Former 2023 graduate Emma Mignone took a gap year and said it was life-changing. “During my gap year, I was able to do an internship for shark research in Mexico, which solidified my love for sharks and the ocean and inspired me to pursue studies in that field!”
Not only can you have fun, but you can also find meaningful work like Emma did. She was able to improve her Spanish skills as well, saying, “I was also able to immerse myself into Mexican and Latin American culture, learning so much and coming way closer to being fluent in Spanish.”
Emma’s advice is, “Just do it! Book trips and explore new places even if you’re scared. You’ll meet amazing people and see beautiful places. Solo travel can be very intimidating but it’s so rewarding. My eyes were opened to so many new things and experiences I wouldn’t have gotten if I went right to college.”
Taking a gap year can be a valuable opportunity for personal growth, but it’s important to plan it thoughtfully to make the most of the experience.
