Senior Shannon Sweet has officially committed to the University of South Carolina. As one of the top 5% of the applicants, Shannon was offered enrollment into the USC Honors college. Over 38,000 students go to USC Columbia and only around 2,300 (or 6%) get admitted into the Honors college.
USC is located in Columbia, the capital of South Carolina. The acceptance rate is 64.1% and the out of state tuition is $35,000. The average GPA of admitted students is 3.7, and the average SAT score is 1280.
Shannon decided on USC due to the programs. She said, “They had everything I wanted within one school. They have great programs all around which was important for me because I am still a little unsure of what I want to do after college.”
Shannon also got a scholarship from the college, which made it even more appealing when she decided on a school. However, she knew right away USC was the one. “When I visited I knew it was the place for me. Just walking around the campus I knew that I could see myself living here for the next four years,” she said.
WHB Alum Kevin Smith just finished his freshman year at USC. He shared that he loved the school. “What I like best about USC is the culture around school spirit and the student body. There were always events and different things going on around campus to get people involved.”
Shannon plans on majoring in psychology and possibly minoring in criminal justice on a pre-law track, but remains open to changing her major if she ends up becoming interested in something else. She said, “For now, I think this will be a good fit for me.”
Kevin’s advice for Shannon is “definitely don’t take a class before 10 am unless you are a morning person and don’t forget to embrace the dorm room living style because it’s only something you do once.”
Shannon, who played volleyball and basketball for the Hurricanes, plans to continue her volleyball career by trying out for the school’s club team.
We wish the best of luck to Shannon this fall! Go Gamecocks!
