During the summer months, a good way to stay in tune with your community is to get a summer job. Not only will you fill up piggy with coins, you will have enough money to maybe buy a car, go out with friends, and start a route to personal independence.
Getting my first job I would have to say was pretty exciting and seemed as if getting a paycheck every week meant that I could finally say I was grown up. Turning 14, probably one of the most exciting birthdays for myself because the day following I ran to the high school guidance office and got my working papers. Soon after I wasted no time and went into McDonald’s and applied for a job. Lucky for me I got the job and started pretty quickly. The fact that I was fourteen, able to enjoy a job, get paid and receive free food was great! Working at McDonalds helped me to learn to save my money and mature. I quickly figured out that my 70-dollar paycheck was not going to pay for everything, but it could help to chip into my weekly candy fund and my splish-splash season pass. What better way to spend you money at the age of fourteen then food and fun, obviously I couldn’t think of one at the time.
This summer, many high schools will be trying to find a job and make a little extra cash. Ryan Wilmott, A junior at WHB high school says, “I will be working for Southampton town as a beach attendant, what better way to spend your time then relaxing by the beach and flirting with the ladies.” Many students would probably agree that hanging out by the beach giving out stickers seems like a pretty good gig.
Although a good option, there are plenty of job out there that high school students could enjoy. Junior Timmy Timms is working at Splish splash over the summer working the front gate. “My job consists of making sure nothing fishy goes down, I have to check the bags and help to form a safe environment for families at the water park.” This summer it seems that many high schoolers will be working under the sun, nothing wrong with that, just remember sunblock!
In retrospect, a summer job is more than just a means of pay, it is an opportunity to venture into something unknown, make new friends and learn things about you self. You would be surprised of what your capable of doing; you just have to give it a shot!
