You scream, I scream, we all scream. Also, we made ice cream.

Are you unhappy with your store bought ice cream? Do you not trust that your ice cream was really produced in a “nut-free” environment? Do you have a personal vendetta against the dairy or dairy byproduct industry? If you answered “yes” or “maybe” to any of these questions, then this is the article for you!

Whenever you as the consumer choose to purchase a food or beverage such as ice cream that was not prepared in front of you, you are placing a certain amount of trust in the producer of said product. While it is certainly admirable to be able to place your faith in a complete stranger, it may not always be the best plan in regards to your health. With food intolerances running rampant throughout the population, it is the responsibility of the consumer to look out for number one, yourself.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Why should I have to give up my favorite cool, milky treat just because there is a chance that I’m severely allergic to it?” Well, young one, the answer is simple. You shouldn’t! For that isn’t the American Dream!

You can still enjoy this soft and refreshing frozen food made with sweetened and flavored milk fat, you just need to make sure that it was produced in a facility free of peanuts, tree nuts, and seeds. For those of you asking yourself, “where could I find such a place,” please stop, for I have the answer. The only way to ensure that your ice cream is completely “you-friendly” is to make it by hand, at home!

Making homemade ice cream has been a favorite American pastime ever since we invented ice. However, before any of you skeptics out there say, “no way José,” just think for a moment. Can you think of anything more fun than getting 25 of your closest friends and family together in your house and squeezing bags of dairy and rock salt until the cream thickens? If you answered “no” or “maybe” to this question, then this is the recipe for you!

Ingredients:

½ cup half-and-half

1 tablespoon sugar

¼ teaspoon vanilla

1 sandwich Ziploc bag

1 gallon Ziploc bag

3 cups crushed ice

1/3 cup rock salt

Directions:

Put first 3 ingredients in the smaller Ziploc bag and seal bag tightly. Put ice and rock salt in the larger bag and then add the filled small bag. Seal the large bag.

Squeeze bag until ice cream is thickened, about 10-15 minutes.

Remove small bag, unseal, and eat with spoon.

No need to even dirty a bowl!

So get your friends together and start making some ice cream! Senior Robert Lochren of the track team remembered, “I made ice cream at home once. I put it together and we put way too much ice into it. It tasted more like creamy ice than ice cream. I don’t know how to cook.” Junior Jackie Moore stated, “Yeah I was there too. It was pretty great until we ran out of powder.”
