Watch out, because our Lady Canes are out for the wins.

After beating William Floyd for the first time since 2011, and with two students making their way into semi-finals, this season was one to remember.

William Floyd was undefeated until our Lady Canes came and dominated. It was a great moment for the team who finished with a 4-3 win. Sophomores Marin Vander Schaaf and Onalee Batcheller won in third and fourth singles, along with Westhampton Beach’s first doubles team of Juliet Tomaro and Rose Peruso, who won, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Juliet Tomaro said it was a really big moment. “It felt amazing; they’re a really competitive team and we’ve always been 2nd place to them and we’re like the underdogs so winning was a really big step for us.”

Juliet has been playing tennis for 3 years now and says her motivation comes from Coach Ski, and of course her mother as well. Juliet tries not to get upset over losing a point when she said, “Each point is a new point; each game is a new game.”

Rose, a freshman, has been playing tennis for four years and said she sees her brother as inspiration and motivation. Although her brother doesn’t play the sport, his caring nature motivates her. Rose encourages others to chase their dreams. “When you really love something go after it no matter what, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.”

Coach Ski is very proud of the girls and said that Juliet and Rose picked playing doubles up so quickly and got so far at such a young age. Juliet and Rose were also the fourth best doubles team in division IV out of 13 other schools. The two also earned All-County status and hope to continue dominate during next year’s tennis season.
