Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, better known as Steph, is defying logic with his masterful shooting from behind the arc. He is having an overall incredible season, in which he is currently averaging 30.3 points per game, and is shooting 45.7% from 3-point land. He set a new record for most consecutive games with a 3 pointer and has broken his own record for most 3’s in a single season. Steph and his Warrior teammates are chasing after the historic regular season record of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls at 72-10. Currently the Warriors are 62-7 with just 13 games remaining in the regular season.

There has been a lot of criticism floated towards Stephen Curry and the Warriors throughout their run at history this year. No criticism has been larger than the comments that Hall of Fame point guard Oscar Robertson made about Stephen Curry and why he is dominating. Robertson thinks that while yes, Curry is a great shooter, a large portion of his success can be attributed to the lack of quality defense being played in today’s game.

When asked if Oscar’s criticism of Curry was just, 10th grader Josh Davonski said, “I do not think his comments are justified; the competition in the league may be different from when he played, but athletes and competition change throughout time.” 10th grader Kenny Massa shared a similar view with Davonski saying, “I think it’s mean and Oscar should just appreciate what Curry has done in this league. Curry is a unique point guard and all he mostly does is shoot threes but that’s what makes Curry different from the other legends and players.”

Steph’s Golden State Warriors are on pace to break the record set by the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls for the most wins in the regular season at 72. This has led many to ponder, in a hypothetical matchup, who wins a game between the 95-96 Bulls and this years Warriors? Both Massa and Davonski agreed in saying the 95-96 Bulls because that team boasted the likes of Hall of Famers Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman.

Another argument running throughout the basketball world is whether or not Curry should be the first ever unanimous MVP selection. Davonski said, “Yes, anyone who has been able to accomplish what he has in a season, mainly the fact he could end with over 400 three’s made, and is someone capable of shooting at that caliber, is worthy of a unanimous MVP.” Massa disagreed saying, “No, I think there are other players in this league that deserve the MVP award more than Curry. LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Kevin Durant all have had monster years just like Curry.”

Stephen Curry is a special player, in that there aren’t many people in the history of the game that have done the kind of the things Steph can do from beyond the arc. The only names that can be mentioned in the same breath as Curry are as Massa and Davonski agreed, guys like Ray Allen and Reggie Miller who are numbers one and two respectively on the NBA’s all-time 3 point list. While he isn’t Michael Jordan, nobody is saying he is, but what he is is a special player that plays an exciting brand of basketball which is captivating to the fans. He is a true blessing to the game of basketball.
