The WHBHS Cross Country team is looking solid this year even with the loss of several athletes due to graduation.
The Cross Country team came in 2nd at the Red Creek Park Peconic Invitational out of 8 teams. They also came in 5th out of 15 teams in the Bear Mountain Invitational Saturday, September 17th. In the dual meet vs. Miller place, Tuesday the 20th, the boys lost by 1 point.
The Cross Country team has hit the ground running this fall. “They are working hard,” said Coach Ford. “We have a solid front four, but what would really help us out is if we could develop two more athletes by the end of October.”
It is clear that Cross Country is not a leisure sport and only attracts a handful of athletes; there are only 12 players on the team. Veteran Dylan McAllister, started running cross-country in 7th grade, states, “I love the rush of endorphins; it makes me feel like superman.”
Another senior, Blane Bossung, who has ran for 11 seasons of Cross Country and track loves “the challenge” and is inspired by the goals he sets and wanting to get better.
Sophomore Graham Brown, another talented athlete, thinks Cross Country “is the best.” He compares the sport to Hamlet “a suspense thriller, killing everyone in the end.”
WHBHS Cross Country’s invitational is being held October 6th at Indian Island in Riverhead. Everyone is welcome to come cheer!
