The administration here at WHBHS may have made a major mistake with the new cellphone policy, as texting has only increased amongst the student body. Is it possible that the new policy only benefits the students?
The answer is yes. In no way does the new policy fix the administrations cellphone “problem”. In fact, “the new ruling” isn’t a tradeoff at all; the school is basically asking for students to text in school now.
I witness students texting in class virtually every period. Has the frequency slowed down from last year? No, it hasn’t. What makers of this new policy didn’t realize when creating this new rule was that now that students can text in the hallway, there is all the more reason for the conversation to carry over into the classroom.
“Yeah, I text in class, I’ve had teachers ask me to put my phone away, but it hasn’t been taken yet,” said Kyle Rubin. If a student sends a text message to another student in between classes, who’s to say that they are going to receive it immediately? Because in most cases, they won’t (there’s terrible service in this school). So, as their phone is having a mini seizure in their pocket, the student more often than not will take out their phone and continue the conversation during class— the conversation that STARTED IN THE HALLWAY.
Unfortunately for teachers, it happens daily here at WHBHS. I am most certainly not complaining, but for the sake of the administration, a realization of their mistake must be made.
