Sitting in US History and a simple question, “Who would you vote for?” is asked. Everyone answers and shares their opinions, except for the teacher. Why is that? Some teachers feel that giving their opinion will sway students in one direction or another.
We listen to them and gain information; they are there to help us tackle a tough topic from all sides so we can see an issue from multiple perspectives. As we get older I think that it’s important to hear what our teachers have to say. In high school we are old enough to show respect by listening to all viewpoints, but not necessarily accepting them all.
In one of my favorite classes, Participation in Government, we learn about many controversial topics. Mr. Bass has been teaching that class for over 20 years and feels very strongly on the issue of teachers sharing their opinions. He thinks that it is “virtually impossible to be neutral in a classroom.” In the class, we are encouraged to share our opinions and participate in the debates.
“Having students share their opinions along with mine creates discussions. I have learned a lot from the students that I wouldn’t have learned anywhere else,” Mr. Bass said.
Having an open discussion where everyone can contribute makes the learning environment more enjoyable. It is true that some teachers don’t want their views to “overshadow” the students’ views. After every discussion Mr. Bass makes it clear that with some of the things he said, they were simply his opinion. I think we’re old enough to take a stand and back up our own outlook.
Mr. Bass feels that not being able to have both students and teachers share opinions is a “problem in society, it is not real learning. Everyone chooses to be vanilla about certain issues which is not real life.”
Teachers have the right to the First Amendment just like everyone else. In some situations our emotions get the best of us and we can’t help but speak about a topic we feel strongly about. We are taught about Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion daily basis but we do not see some of our teachers following that. Balance is important in all circumstances – we love to hear about a teacher’s family and what they do outside of school; hearing their opinions is just as exciting. As a senior, I feel that I am able to come up with my own conclusion after hearing everyone’s opinions. Overall teachers are frowned upon when sharing their political views, as Mr. Bass gets a lot of grief over this matter.
In the long run, after opinions are voiced, everyone can come up with a conclusion for him or herself; it’s a learning experience that is only beneficial for everyone involved.
