For the first time in history, WHBHS changed their graduation ceremony to Friday evening opposed to Sunday afternoon. The change was supposed to take place last year, but due to backlash, the date was reversed.
This year, seniors will walk across the football field to receive their diplomas on Friday night at 6 o’clock. So far no criticism has been made about graduation being on Friday June 21, the day after prom. Many students haven’t realized the date change on the calendar. “I didn’t even know there was a date change, but I don’t want it to change,” said senior Brooke Rera. Also, prom and graduation will be “back to back.” With a Thursday night prom the day before, seniors may be reluctant to get out of bed the next day.
The upside is that graduation is at night. Senior Stephanie Freund is all for the change. “It’s nicer under the lights and it definitely won’t be as hot,” which is definitely something to look forward to. 2013 seniors won’t be sweating under our big white or green caps and gowns.
Whether graduation is a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, the class of 2013 will still be proud and excited to be graduating from Westhampton Beach High School. See you there!
