The 2010 Hurricane homecoming marked the start of new traditions at WHBHS – the first homecoming game on the new turf field and a surprisingly positive pep rally.
Spirit Week kicked off to a great start on Monday, September 20 with Twin Day. Tuesday was Decades Day, Wednesday was Gender Switch Day, and Thursday was everyone’s favorite- Sports Day! Friday was the traditional Class Color Day, or Togo Day for the seniors.
Sophomore Nikki Mendoza felt, “Gender Bender Day was the best for girls! I got to be extra comfy in sweatpants and a t-shirt. But for guys… not so much.”
All of the excitement of Spirit Week led up to the legendary pep rally!
At this year’s pep rally, the freshmen took first place for spirit week because of their great outfits for all of the themed days. But, for the bleacher decorations, juniors, the class of 2012, took first place for the 3rd year in a row! Great school spirit everyone!
Immediately after the pep rally, students got right to work on their floats for the annual Homecoming Parade. This year’s theme was seasons. Seniors were winter, juniors were fall, sophomores were summer, and freshmen were spring. The juniors also took first place for their float this year, but each grade had a float worth talking about.
“The parade was lots of fun, I got to spend time with my cheerleading team and celebrate school spirit,” said Junior Nicole Recinos.
Friday night after the parade was what we were all waiting for—the big Homecoming football game. The boys played a great game against Miller Place. Senior Cory Schulz had a phenomenal game with four touchdowns! The sky was foggy, but the Hurricanes played hard and won with a final score of 28-9.
It was a perfect end to a wonderful week at Westhampton Beach. Go Canes!
