Feelings on a Unique Spirit Week

Bleacher decorating is on hold this year due to COVID-19.

Last week is supposed to be spirit week in WHBS, but due to COVID-19 it was  postponed. With no sports to celebrate, we wanted to know whether students would rather participate in spirit week now, or save it for the spring when sports are to resume. After chatting with some of our community, we’ve found that our students are split on the decision.

Football season here in WHB elicits school spirit from many of our students. Without the homecoming football game at the end of the week, some feel it may not be the same having a spirit week. According to Deegan Laube, a junior on the football team, “If spirit week happens during football season, it will hype up the team more.”

Another junior on the football team, Owen Spizuoco, agreed with Deegan, says,”Spirit week should happen during football season, or there is really no point.” For many students and athletes, spirit week builds up the hype for the games and is part of the tradition that they don’t want to miss out on during the football season later on.

For other students, having spirit week in the beginning of the year as usual would be more exciting and would bring the whole school together being that we are separated into A/C day B/D day groups right now. Though there may be no games to celebrate, students still want to show their love and spirit for the WHB community during this challenging and unsure time.

Junior Lexi Sielaw, thinks that, “Spirit week would be better if it happened now because if school gets moved to fully remote, we won’t have a spirit week to participate in at all.”

Junior Kayla Graves, who plays basketball, agreed with Lexi. “Right now there is nothing happening. We need something to make the beginning of the year more exciting.” With the hybrid schedule, postponed sports, and new regulations- some students are left feeling bored and discouraged.

As dedicated seniors of the varsity football team, Aidan Cassara, Jackson Hulse and Christian Capuano have their own outtakes on what’s happening regarding spirit week. As seniors who have looked forward to their last football season at WHB for a long time, the postponement of this year’s football season may seem to put a damper on things, however our varsity football team has a positive look on what could happen to spirit week this year.

According to Aidan, “As much as I wanted football to be during the fall, as it always is and to have everything else that follows to be happening right now, I would rather have spirit week to be at least during one of the sports seasons (lacrosse or football). I would definitely like it to be during the season though, because it brings extra excitement to the game.”

Though Aidan wishes for a normal season and spirit week, he still wants to play and have his school cheering behind him during the postponed season. Jackson said, “Honestly with everything going on, myself and the rest of the team would appreciate any type of school spirit to show their support.”

With the new regulations of COVID-19 leaving the football team and many students feeling uneasy, Jackson and the rest of the team are grateful for whatever type of support and spirit they can offer. Lastly Christian says,“As a football player I’d obviously rather have spirit week during the season since that’s always been the tradition. Also since the season falls in the spring, we might not have to do hybrid learning, and there’s a chance we’d be able to have spirit week with no limitations which would be great.” Christian is optimistic that later on in the year we would be able to have a full on spirit week, though if that does not happen, he would prefer to feel the whb community’s support during the postponed season.

Though not all students can agree on when spirit week should take place, they can all agree that they are excited to show their support and spirit for the WHBHS community. COVID-19 guidelines may have our spirit week looking a little different than previous years, our students still anticipate the fun-filled week.
