Hurricane Watch Wins at B.A.S.H Awards

On Monday, June 5th, 2017, Southold High School hosted the inaugural B.A.S.H Awards (Broadcast Awards for Senior High) to celebrate student media and to recognize the hard work by broadcast journalism students across Long Island.

The first symposium of its kind in a NYS public school, the B.A.S.H was attended by Dr. Betty Rosa, the Chancellor of NYS Board of Regents, who supports the authentic and purposeful learning student media courses provide.

Other guests included keynote speaker CNN anchor Miguel Marquez, and News 12 Long Island anchor Drew Scott, who also served as one of the contest’s judges.

During the award ceremony, Westhampton Beach’s Hurricane Watch took home three prizes out of five nominations.

Casey Evans won third place for Best Opening segment for period 6’s Friends themed show intro.

Jake Viera also took third in Sports for his golf package, which aired September 30, 2016.

The big winners of the day were Owen Williams, Emily Wichard, and Jillian McManus, who earned first place honors in the Community News category. Their package about the Live Your Cor foundation originally aired on the January 13, 2017.
