The WHBHS production of Godspell will be on Friday, March 20 at 7:30 PM, Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, March 22 at 2 PM.

Last year’s spring musical, Urinetown, was quite an extravagant success, and because of that many are expecting the same this coming spring. Godspell, starring seniors James Blydenburg and John Tocco, is just around the corner and the entire cast is hard at work trying to perfect their production.

Godspell is a rather religious show, but it can be enjoyed by anyone. “Ultimately, Godspell is the story of a community that comes together in the name of love and brotherhood,” explains John Tocco, who will be playing the role of Judas. “It’s a fantastic show, but it’s strange, which is one of the things I’ve grown to really enjoy about it,” he adds.

Those who have seen or know the show know exactly what Tocco is saying. The combination of biblical texts set to rock music and strange religious references ties the show together in a perfectly obscure production that is great for anyone and everyone.

Mrs. Doyle, the show’s producer and set builder, explains that some of the scenes in the show, although seemingly religious, have every day undertones that everyone can relate to. “We can create something even more beautiful than what was destroyed. I think that it is an important message, and I believe that it embodies the spirit of the cast, and of the students in the high school,” when referencing the song “Beautiful City.”

During the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and other crises, the students at WHBHS have all banded together to help out the community, especially the drama department. “You had football players working next to clarinet players, working next to AP scholars and studio artists- totally disparate groups of people working together to do something amazing,” remembers Mrs. Doyle.

Tocco’s favorite scene in the show is when Jesus, played by James Blydenburgh, joins him to sing “All For the Best.” “It’s an extremely fun song, and it’s been my favorite song in the show since I heard the cast performance of it for the first time,” he explained.

Godspell will be opening Friday, March 20th at 7:30 PM in the District Auditorium, with a second show on Saturday, March 21st at 7:30 PM and a third on Sunday, March 22nd at 2:00 PM. The whole cast and crew hope to see many of the students come out and support their efforts of the past few months to put on a spectacular production.
