Book Review: The Fault in Our Stars

The Fault in Our Stars is John Green’s best work. This is the sort of book that you purchase in the afternoon and stay up until 5am with it. Well you’ll finish it at 4am but don’t forget that extra hour that you’ll need to cry.

Augustus, the main character who is sick with cancer, falls in love with Hazel who also has cancer. Already this book sounds emotional, but I would like to bring up the fact that their best friend, Isaac, even becomes blind.  As troublesome as this group sounds, they always have high spirits and bring out the best in each other.

John Green is not the sort of author that you’ll need a dictionary and numerous websites just to find out what each paragraph in their books actually mean.  John Green doesn’t need fancy words and complex sentences to make a work of art. John Green captures such beauty and continuously brings out pure emotions from his readers.

I applaud Green tremendously for this book – the concept of two cancer stricken teenagers falling in love is just completely out there and would be such a challenge to properly grasp this well enough to craft it into a book.

Warning if you plan to read this book make sure to get the big pack of tissues from BJs or the new Costco opening up in Riverhead.

List of best quotes from The Fault in Our Stars:

“My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations.”

“That’s the thing about pain,” Augustus said, and then glanced back at me. “It demands to be felt”

“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”

“The marks humans leave are too often scars.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you.”

“You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.”
