We all have our favorite kind of music genre, whether it’s rap, rock, hip-hop, country, metal, scrap music, or anything else, music is a huge part of a teenager’s life. But, why is music so important?
The answer you might get from a specialist or a counselor could be “because people are generally insecure and they have needs to belong to a group and establish a self image.” But in a young adult’s point of view, that’s not it at all! The truth is, music is part of our personality. The type of music we listen to definitely defines us. Some of the simplest lyrics in a person’s favorite song might explain more about him or her than if you were to read his or her diary.
Music can light up someone’s life; it can make us no longer hold grudges or carry hate in our hearts. Music can grab listeners and give them a sense of freedom.
There are many positive effects of music in everyday life. A growing branch in medicine called “music therapy” is rapidly gaining popularity. Music relaxes and stimulates the brain, and can help people physically have the strength and determination to get well when they’re sick. Since music is administered to both the left and right side of the brain, it can help spark inspiration and intrigue the listener to give effort and have an excellent task performance since it changes moods.
Research at Arizona State University shows that when you put a playlist of songs on while falling asleep, you’re dreams will be so much more vivid. While alone, if you’re listening to music, you usually feel so comfortable and relaxed. Music helps express our crazy teenage feelings/hormones more then we can!
Many people wonder, “Why is it when I am sad, I listen to sad music?” The answer to this question is because when we can’t express our feelings, we need someone else to. It helps knowing other people know what it’s like to take a walk in your shoes. Also, we love to wallow in our own misery. It has a lot to do with the mourning period we have to all go through. We listen to sad songs which we can identify with and go, “Yea, I’m feeling you, you get what I say and you put it into words which express my heart.”
Overall, music does something to people that changes their mood and reaction towards what life throws at them. It can affect a person good or bad. Most of the time, it’s used for good things, like to inspire people to get healthy and stay on track.
