New Music For Fall

Now I know this summer we were “All About That Bass”, but fall is here and it’s bringing more than turning leaves. With the fall season comes new music from the best artists, and this year has pretty good lineup.

In the summer people are hypnotized by high-energy pop songs that are played excessively on the radio, but with fall comes a new mood. In the words of Sophomore Alexandra Meyer, the music starts to “become a little deeper” and we look for tracks that would suit long dark bus rides to school rather than sunny days at the beach.

Last fall there was plenty of new music to satisfy this feeling. Long time favorites like Miley Cyrus, Eminem, Taylor Swift, Panic! At The Disco, and Justin Timberlake all came out with albums- some more controversial than others. Beyoncé dropped a bomb when she released a surprise self-titled album in early December, and there were also debut albums from The 1975, HAIM, and Lorde that, if I may, ruled our playlists.

This year, there are some recurring artists- Taylor Swift’s “first documented, official pop album,” 1989, releases on October 27th. One Direction has a new album called Four coming out on November 17th , which can be expected to be number one everywhere. Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett have also released a collaborative album that will definitely jazz up the charts.

R&B is also going to have a good season this year. Jhene Aiko’s PBR&B album Souled Out came out earlier this month. It’s an intimate album where it’s often obvious she is singing from personal experiences. Billboard describes her vocals as “lithe enough to seduce, while her sharp lyricism and wordplay are tools to knife through a man’s crap.”

Jessie Ware’s new album Tough Love can be expected October 24th. “Say You Love Me,” the second single released from the album which was co-written with Ed Sheeran, is the type of slow-burning lyrical and rhythmic genius that makes you feel nostalgic about things that never happened to you.

In a turn of events Nick Jonas, yes the one from The Jonas Brothers, has actually released new music that is majorly channeling R&B vibes. The ex Jo-Bro has come out with two singles that can be expected to be on his self-titled solo debut album- “Chains” and “Jealous” which both feature dark beats and personal lyrics.

In the genre of rap and hip-hop, some familiar names are going to pop up.  Lil Wayne is releasing Tha Carter V in late October. This album has been in the works for years and was actually supposed to be released in 2013 but was delayed.

Tyga has scheduled his next album, The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty, to be released November 18th- the day before his 25th birthday. The Gold Album so far features artists like Justin Bieber, Young Thug and many more collaborations to be expected.

On more of the pop-y side of these genres, there is Nicki Minaj. Everyone has at least heard the first single off of the new album The Pinkprint (due to drop November 24th), “Anaconda” since it is currently number 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and has been infecting the Internet.

In the rock community, some interesting things are going to happen. Pink Floyd is releasing their first album in 20 years! Oddly enough, the album was announced via tweet. You can expect The Endless River on November 11th.

The alternative rock band, The Foo Fighters, is also releasing a new album that has fans jumping out of their skin. Each song on this eight-track album was written, recorded, and produced in a different city. Sonic Highways, due to release October 21st , is being called “a musical map of America.” Along with the album comes an eight-episode HBO series chronicling the road trip creation of the album that is sure to be riveting.

Alt-J’s new album This Is All Yours was released September 22nd is described as “inventive, seductive, and dazzling” by The Telegraph and has been doing really well.

The indie-rock band Interpol also put out an album earlier this month. El Pintor is the band’s first album without bassist Carlos Dengler and channels a British post-punk sound and is described as “a sublime and polished album that ranges from rocking to almost wistful” by The Sydney Morning Herald.

Charlie XCX, the singer-songwriter who wrote Icona Pop’s “I Love It” and also dominated The Fault In Our Stars Soundtrack with “Boom Clap”, is releasing her second album soon. Sucker, which is dropping October 21st, can be expected to have Charlie’s classic electric (electronic) pop vibes and is sure to be a success.

Aussie native Vance Joy, has come out with the album, Dream Your Life Away, which was released on September 9th and features his hit single “Riptide” the four-time platinum song that made him famous. The indie folk album is beautiful. Vance Joy has embraced his take on the genre and his gift for storytelling is evident in each song.

Nico & Vinz’s album Black Star Elephant that came out recently is a real fusion of genres. The sound is a unique mismatch of afrobeat, pop, R&B, reggae, soul, and so on. The Norwegian singing/songwriting duo met in Oslo, Norway in 2009 and were originally a rap group called Envy but evolved into what they are now, before signing with Warner Bros in January. The album, which name stems from African soccer teams, is set to be released October 14th and will contain 13 songs and 7 interludes.

So whether you like to sing at the top of your lungs to Taylor Swift or listen to the rhythmic stories of Vance Joy, there is sure to be music for you this season. When Alexandra Meyer was asked what she would recommend to someone looking for new music she said, “Someone looking for new music should listen to a bit from each genre out there. After they decide what they like, then try and pick out some bands and songs to look into.” So if you’re not sure what you like, or are looking to try something new, look around and you might just surprise yourself.
