Preseason has ended, and the games have begun in the WHBHS 2016 winter sports season.  Track, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and cheerleading all have been looking good in their first few events, and look forward to winning seasons from here on out.

One of WHBHS most popular and most successful winter programs is wrestling.  The team has not started off the way they would have hoped with a record of 0-2, but they showed their stuff in a tournament in Queens to start off the season, placing second.  Freshman wrestler Gage Rubio said, “We lost to two teams we should not have, but we look forward to making a breakthrough in the rest of the season and put these last two matches behind us.”

The boy’s basketball organization this year has started off very strong with an overall program record of 7-3, (JV is 5-0, Varsity is 2-3).  But after only one league game, both teams know the important part of the season has not even begun yet.  A second year JV basketball player Aidan Sattler, on the topic of the JV basketball team’s success, said “It definitely feels good to already beat our terrible one win season last year, but we aren’t even through a fraction of our season yet.  We have so much more to come.”  As both teams begin league play, the competition only gets harder and harder as teams like Amityville and Harborfields step onto the court.

The girl’s basketball teams, JV and Varsity, have also started off pretty well with an undefeated JV team and a Varsity that won their first game on December 19th against Rocky Point.  They hope this season marks a homecoming of girls basketball playoff contenders, something that we all have been waiting for.

Maureen Duffy, Jenny Jordan, Serena Choi, Juan Lasso, and Jack Ryan lead the pack for the WHB winter track team.  After two meets, over 10 runners have placed in their event, or more than one event.  They look forward to making WHBHS proud in the rest of the winter, just like they do in the announcements everyday.

Obviously all of our Hurricane winter sports have started out well.  This 2016 season could be one of the best sports seasons we have seen in awhile.  Let’s hope they could just keep it up for the next month and a half.
