Bundle Up for Winter Track

Want to join a school activity, get fit and hang out with friends? Join a winter sport and you can. Starting November 16th students can join boys and girls basketball, boys and girls winter track, wrestling or cheerleading. Jerry Gwinn, one of the boy’s winter track captains, and Valentina Yepes, who is planning on joining winter track and has done winter basketball in the past talked a lot about the season to come and reasons to join.

Gwinn has been doing winter track for the past four years of high school and is now one of the captains. Gwinn said he’s looking forward to this season and teaching the students that joined this year. Since Gwinn is a senior this year, he said, “I’m looking forward to going to the Armory in NYC to run for one last time. It’s basically a 200m indoor track with bleachers full of kids screaming at you.” This track season they are focusing on their individual events to qualify for the Yale Invitational.

Since it is winter track, it’s going to get very cold Gwinn says, “The hardest thing is probably the amount of running we do in the freezing cold. There are days when you just want to throw yourself down a flight of stairs because of how cold it is outside.” He says to just buy compression tights, gloves, hats and Under Armour because it will save your life during the cold practices. Gwinn also stated you should work on your core before and during the season. He said you should join because it’s a very welcoming environment and it’s interesting. Its like track has it’s own culture…basically as if it’s a country.

Yepes has done basketball for the past five years and is planning on joining winter track this year. ”I did basketball for the previous five years, but I’m excited to do winter track this year. I think that it’s going to be a nice change. I’m just scared of how cold it’s going to be since basketball is always indoors,” says Yepes.

If you do decide to join winter track, or any sport, (which you should) be prepared for the cold and hard work. Both Gwinn and Yepes would recommend joining winter track or any winter sport. Best of luck to all winter sports teams this season! Go ‘Canes!
