RUN JENNY RUN

Winter 2014/2015 has been an amazing track season for the girls at WHB, as the student body knows from all the morning announcements, and Jenny Jordan is a name you’re sure to find floating around whenever to topic arises.

Jordan is a sophomore and has been running track since seventh grade after her older brother suggested she give it a try when she had to stop gymnastics, and she hasn’t looked back since. Her favorite part of the sport is the social aspect and team dynamic as well as the sense of accomplishment that comes with beating her own personal records, which she did quite a bit of this year.

Jordan also runs with the4x4 relay team including Grace Gilbakian, Lauren Lorefice, and Nora Murphy. At the Millrose Games at the Armory earlier this month the Lady Hurricanes broke the school’s 4×4 record with a time of 3:58.72, it was previously 4:03.72. They have also qualified for states.

In order to be the amazing athlete she is, Jordan puts in a lot of hard work. When asked what specific training she endures she answered simply “Whatever Mr. Broich says.” This tends to be a lot of interval training, weight lifting, plyometrics, and distance running paired with eating and sleeping well.

Mary Cain is one of Jordan’s biggest inspirations and role models. Cain is an 18 year-old middle distance runner from Bronxville, New York and was the youngest athlete ever to represent the US in the World Championships meet. She draws inspiration from her because she is strong and an amazing athlete but also just an all around cool person. Jordan is still not sure if she wants to continue running track in college, but is open to the idea.

Mr. Broich, who has been the track coach at WHB for 29 years and who has worked with Jordan for two, says that Jordan is a great team player and is “completely selfless.” Which would explain why the 4×4 has been doing so great, when you put girls together who are not only incredible athletes but also best friends who want to see each other succeed, amazing things can happen.

Westhampton Beach will be hearing Jenny Jordan’s name a lot in the future, her high school track career is long from over. Jordan’s best advice to athletes looking to perform at their best is to “get in shape before your season begins.” She also added specific to track, “You’re going to hate it at first, but if you stick with it, it will get easier and you will have so much fun.”
