The varsity volleyball team has been spiking away with wins this fall 2014 season. Lady Canes have finished the season with an overall record of 16-2. Defeating team after team, the Lady Canes have been entered to its first county final since 2007.

On October 31st, ‘Canes took a successful win of 3-0 against school rivals ESM in the Suffolk County Class A quarterfinals. This was a very successful game for the girls volleyball team. The players next thought was, the semifinals. Junior Shea Casey stated, “We were really excited especially because we were versing ESM which we already beat in the regular season.” Since they won the quarterfinals, getting into the semifinals was a huge deal for the Lady Canes.

The volleyball team this year consisted of 17 dedicated girls. Coached by Leonard Zaloga, the team consists of one freshman, Shannon Hewlett; five Sophomores Cameron Bancroft, Alyssa Romano, Kayleigh Walker, Britney Palladino, Sarena Choi; five Juniors Shea Casey, Arianna Brierton, Lexi Pellechia, Maddie Neuberger, Sunny Foglia; three Seniors Sarah Culver, Katie Parry, Lauren Lorefice; and one 7th grader Isabelle Smith.

The semifinals game was on November 5 in the Suffolk Community College against Kings Park. Unfortunately, Kings Park beat the Lady Canes with a 3-0 win. Even though the Lady Canes didn’t win this game, the school is still proud of the hard-working and dedicated team. Shea Casey said, “It’s upsetting that the season is over, but since we did so well everyone seems happy. And we always have next year to advance even further.”

Westhampton Beach teachers and students are very proud of the volleyball team. They’ve worked so hard this season and showed great improvement. Congratulations girls!
