Whipping Up Awareness

Whipping Up Awareness

Sixteen-year-old Melville resident Jordan Belous is making a huge difference in the life of many pediatric cancer patients. Belous is raising money for pediatric cancer. She started this campaign on August 17th  and is still raising money.  One can raise awareness by submitting a video of themselves doing “The Whip” to www.whippediatriccancer.org.

Belous came up with the idea for “Whip Pediatric Cancer” over the summer at a camp she volunteered at for kids with cancer. “On the first day of camp I asked them a simple question,” Says Belous “I asked them what’s your favorite song? And they started singing “Watch Me Whip” and started dancing. My campers were 3 and 4 and I thought it was so cute and that’s when I put two and two together to start whip pediatric cancer.”

Belous chose to donate to pediatric cancer because it has been a big part of her life. When Belous was only 2 years old her mom was diagnosed with a rare pediatric cancer called Ewings Sarcoma. “At a young age I was exposed to Pediatric cancer and it’s been my passion to raise awareness,” Says Belous. Belous’s goal is for the “Whip Pediatric Cancer” movement to go viral. Belous’s original goal was to raise $10,000 dollars but they surpassed that goal and are aiming for $20,000 dollars!

“I was inspired to pursue this campaign because I want to make a difference in the life of kids with cancer. Pediatric cancer isn’t rare. It is the leading cause of death in children around the world. Cancer robbed them of their childhood and I want people to be aware of that,” Adds Belous. Westhampton Beach Junior Ashley Rippe never heard of  the movement but says, “It’s really cool to hear that somebody around my age could make such a big impact on others its really inspiring.” You can go the www.whippediatriccancer.org and check it out,  and help Belous save the lives of many! “Many people have called me their “hero” and it feels pretty cool,” adds Belous.
