Behind the Scenes of WHB News

Arsh Naseer, Staff Writer

Often times, WHB news staff writers are behind the key board, writing about the newest events, hottest stories, and some pretty cool students or teachers. But no one ever writes about us or what actually happens the site.

So, for future Journalism students or just for anyone else who’s curious, here’s how it goes. Every day during period 3, we have Journalism, with the coolest teacher ever (Mrs. Mett if you didn’t know).  It’s always pretty laid back in here, but only if articles are uploaded on time.  Meeting a deadline is key.

A typical week for us would be to come in and start brainstorming articles.   We all claim our topics so no one clashes articles.  After, we research the topic, generate open-ended questions, and then set out and start interviewing for our topic. (For the record, walking up to a stranger and asking them for an interview is really awkward, and I’d be lying if I said it gets easier over time.)

After research and interviews, we write a lead (a capturing first sentence) multiple times until we think it’s the best one. Next, we type until we finish our article or think it hits all the necessary points.  And, during the whole process we’re editing constantly (or Mrs. Mett is).

Finally, we set out to get a great picture and upload the article to whbnews.com.   So the next time you refresh The Hurricane Eye you’ll see the newest article we’ve worked so hard on.

We then start brainstorming again (trust me, finding an article topic is not as easy as it sounds), and the process repeats.
